Diplomatic golfing fiasco in Venezuela

Caracas: Golfers at the Caracas Country Club have been issued with a stern warning hanging from the Swiss ambassador’s residence, which is located near the third hole. A large sign was hung on the fence, warning golfers that any golf balls fired into the property that injured or killed those inside would be in breach of diplomatic protocol.

The translated text reads as follows: “Launching balls into this residence is a danger to whoever is within Swiss territory and a violation of the Vienna Convention if a golf ball injures or kills anyone on Swiss soil.” The ambassador reportedly declined to comment further on the matter when invited to do so by Reuters journalists. The Venezuelan Federation of Golf issued a statement, greeting the arrival of the banner with ‘astonishment’ and calling it a ‘strange overreaction’. In any event, golfers at the club are likely taking a bit more care when approaching the third hole.
