A language exchange group in Paris has banned a 23-year old Chinese member from attending future meetings after it emerged that the girl had been deliberately teaching other members false translations. The nature of the fake translations were generally sexual and quite rude, leading to embarrassing results for several group members.
Group member César Narcisse, a 28-year old Frenchman from Lyon, had never studied Chinese before, and was one of the girl’s first victims in the group. “After we had our weekly group meeting, she asked me if I wanted to practice some Chinese in exchange for French,” he revealed. Mr Narcisse accepted the offer and accompanied the girl to a nearby cafe. The first half of their chat was in French, but later on the girl started to teach Mr Narcisse some basic phrases in Chinese. “Because my company has many Chinese clients, I thought it would be useful to learn some basic phrases I could use. I asked her to teach me how to say: Nice to meet you”. The girl instructed him that he should say ‘Cáo nī mǎ pìyǎn’, which roughly translates to ‘Make love to your mother’s anus’. Needless to say, when Mr Narcisse later used the phrase in a meeting with a Chinese client, it caused quite an ugly scene. “The man was furious and slapped my face before storming out of the office.”
However, some group members claimed that the girl’s Chinese lessons were actually quite helpful. In particular, Herberto Álvaro, a 25-year old native of Barcelona, reported that the girl taught him a phrase which he used many times with great success. “I was going to Shanghai for a business trip, so I asked her to teach me something romantic I could say if I met a nice girl, like: You have beautiful eyes,” said Mr Álvaro. “She translated it for me, and I said it to a few girls at nightclubs, and they all went home with me.” However, after the girl was busted by other members for her fake translations, Mr Álvaro decided to check with an expert on what “Wǒ yào chā nǐ mèimei” really meant. “Well in a way, I guess, that’s kind of what I wanted to say,” he admitted.
